The navigation meanders through water meadows between Springfield Lock and Barns Lock. Just below Springfield Lock the navigation is crossed by the original 1930's Chelmsford bypass.
There are two pub/restaurants near Barns Mill Lock The Fox and Raven and the Barns Farm. They both do a good range of food and beers. Leave the navigation by the path just beyond the bridge below the lock and bear to the left go through the kissing gate and they are at the top of the little lane.
